"I had a medical [check], remember, back in May? I disappeared off the other week and had it biopsied and it's cancer. It's aggressive, but, it's really early, so the treatment will be, you know," he said, trailing off as Cooper became visibly emotional.

Clarkson reassured them, "Listen, I'm not daft, so it's going to be in about two weeks, maybe three, I'll have to go and have an operation," before the series continued with other scenes chronicling their work on the land.

Then, in the following episode (the final installment of season 5), Clarkson is shown in the hospital after an unexpected complication arose.

One of Clarkson's fellow* Top Gear *personalities, Sabine Schmitz, died in 2021 at 51 after a cancer diagnosis three years earlier.

*Top Gear* producer Clare Pizey wrote a tribute to Schmitz at the time. "Sabine was a beloved member of the *Top Gear* family and presenting team since 2016, having first appeared on the show in 2004, and everyone who had the pleasure of working with her on the team is in shock at this news," she said. "The 'Queen of the Nürburgring,' Sabine radiated positivity, always wore her cheeky smile no matter how hard things got and was a force of nature for female drivers in the motoring world."
