Leonardo DiCaprio and Jeff Bezos have teamed up to launch an endeavour committed to a positive cause: restoring endangered species. The project aims to provide long-term funding for conservation efforts by carefully targeting the near-extinct animal species that are threatened by habitat loss and climate change.

The project was announced on the Titanic star’s Instagram, stating that the philanthropic initiative is a joint venture between several organizations. But more importantly, the project would give conservationists more time and resources to help the species’ population recover.

On August 4, he announced the Phoenix Species Project on his Instagram, calling it a “global effort” to help restore 100 of the world’s most threatened species from the brink of extinction. He continued that Bezos’ Earth Fund and Re: wild are working together with support from DiCaprio, Age of Union, and The Todd Graves Family Foundation.

Backed by a $200 million commitment, the Phoenix Species Project is the largest single philanthropic fund dedicated exclusively to saving Critically Endangered species. The initiative aims to provide targeted support to help recover 100 distinct species, spanning mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, invertebrates, and plants, across 30 countries worldwide.

The post mentioned that they have over 100 local and international partners globally, including indigenous Peoples, local communities, conservationists, and governments. Together, they would work and make tailored recovery efforts for the animals and their natural habitats.

In another Instagram post, he shared that the animals include the Sumatran Rhino from Indonesia, the Indri from Madagascar, and the world’s heaviest parrot, the Kākāpō, from New Zealand. He expressed his pride in the ambitious project that is helping to save these species and extended his gratitude to the supporters of the cause.

The report also turns heads because DiCaprio would be reuniting with Lauren Sánchez, Bezos’ wife, with whom he had an awkward interaction at the amFAR Gala in 2025.
