Jeffrey Dean Morgan had no choice but to be part of *Sterling Point*. It was quite literally in the script.

“I’ve known [creator] Megan [Park] for a while,” Morgan tells* *. “I remember I got the script and here comes Joe and it’s like, ‘He’s got tattoos all over the place.’ And then in parentheses it says ‘Jeffrey Dean Morgan.’ And I’m like, ‘Well, it’s in the script, I gotta do it.’ I said yes without a hesitation. I knew it would be special.”

Although he’ll be the first to admit he didn’t realize just *how *special. The series follows 17-year-old Annie (Ella Rubin) as she inherits her grandfather’s island and upon visiting, starts to uncover a number of secrets about her late mother and her family at large, from having a surprise sister to finding out about her mother’s romantic past with Joe (Morgan).

For Morgan, it was a break from the world of *The Walking Dead* and *The Boys *and so many of his more recent projects. “It’s fun not being covered in blood and guts and just trying to play a dad who’s as flawed as I am as a father,” he says. “I could relate to it in so many ways and that’s a joy.”

And yet, despite his connection with his character, Morgan didn’t think he’d watch the show in one sitting. “I’ve never done that with anything I’ve been in ever,” he says. “I haven’t seen 90 percent of the work I’ve ever done in my life.” (It’s also not a super common occurrence for things he’s not in: “*Heated Rivalry *was the last show I sat down and watched, like, eight hours of TV. That show hooked me,” he says.)

The actor admits he didn’t expect to stay up until the early hours of the morning watching the show. “I can’t say I was surprised because I know what a talent Megan is, but I was surprised at how good the show is,” he says with a laugh. “It’s messy and real, and not just for the kids but for the adults as well. You really get sucked into this world.”

That messiness was also a part of Morgan’s experience making the show, as he spent most of the season thinking that Joe was indeed Ramona’s (Amélie Hoeferle) father. “I thought Joe was the father until I read the last script,” Morgan says. “And frankly, I was a little bit upset about it.

“I liked playing the scenes as honest as I could, especially with Amélie and thinking I was her dad,” he continues. “And then kinda being offended that I wasn’t. It was sort of shattering to me. He ruins his relationship with his son, with his wife. He makes a lot of mistakes. And then he’s not even the father.”

But Morgan feels strongly that Joe is “not a bad guy.”

“I think he was so sold on the fact that he was indeed gonna be the father and he was gonna somehow make things right, and he sacrifices a lot thinking that what he’s gonna do, when in fact he’s not. So he’s kind of dug himself kind of a deeper hole,” he says.

And that means that, should the series get renewed for a second season, there’d be plenty to explore. “If we’re able to do another year, I feel like there’s a lot of story to tell,” Morgan says. “The parents have been set up in a particular way that we can really find out some more and have some really great storylines moving forward for [what] we call the Bingo Club at this point.”

So yeah, it’s safe to say the veteran actor is happy he took that initial parenthetical so literally and joined the show, even if it’s a bit of a departure from his recent work. “I hadn’t played a normal person really since Denny [on *Grey’s Anatomy*], and he was dying, so that wasn’t really normal. It’s been a long time since I just played a guy. When Megan called, I was like, ‘Are you sure? Is there, like, a monster or something I gotta kill?’”

Thankfully, there are no monsters on the island of Sterling Point, but there are a lot of upset teenagers.
