The Death of Robin Hood features a new, darker take on the classic Robin Hood story
Hugh Jackman made one of the biggest physical transformations of his career for his latest role in The Death of Robin Hood.
Speaking to PEOPLE at the premiere of the film, which features a darker, new take on the classic Robin Hood tale, the Wolverine actor, 57, opened up about how he passed the time while sitting for extended periods in the makeup trailer as he was given a long, white beard and weathered look.
"Music," he tells PEOPLE. "It's not just me. I'm in a little mini team: Me, [hairstylist Sean Flanigan], and [makeup artist Pamela S. Westmore]."
"We've done a lot of films together. Sometimes we listen to a little bit of a book, [but] not very often," Jackman shares. "Mainly it's music, and we sort of go in different turns. We get sick of our own music, so we like hearing others."
The Greatest Showman alum adds that lately, he's been playing '70s music when he takes control of the aux cord in the makeup trailer.
"I try to put my favorites on, but they are all like, 'No,' " he jokes about his team. "My favorites are an odd mix of music."

Jackman also shares that the cast and crew were able to spend lots of time bonding while filming in Northern Ireland.
"It was so beautiful, honestly," the actor says of the set. "Every single person, all the actors and the crew, we all put our phones aside because I didn't want to be on my phone while I was in these incredible locations and we all just hung out and talked. We really did."
"It was really cool," he adds. "The crew were great and we all just sort of pinched ourselves to [be] where we were."

When the trailer for The Death of Robin Hood was released earlier this year, Jackman made headlines for his dramatic look in the film. Much of his face is hidden beneath a massive, gray beard and long, silver tresses in the A24 movie from writer-director Michael Sarnoski.

Teasing the plot, Sarnoski told Entertainment Weekly in December 2025 that Robin Hood "was this murderous outlaw who did a lot of terrible things and was kind of monstrous. But he's lived long enough to see this folklore get created about him. He's figuring out how he feels about that, about being portrayed as a hero when he knows what he really was."
Sarnsoki also declined to answer when he was asked how much of Jackman's gray hair and beard came from wigs and how much came from the actor himself. However, he teased to EW that viewers "will be seeing some [of the actor's] musclebound physique."
Also speaking with the outlet, Jackman shared that the story of The Death of Robin Hood — which also stars Bill Skarsgård as "a version of Little John," as the director previously put it, and Jodie Comer in an unknown role — compelled him because of how real the central figure comes across.
"What I love so much about Mike's vision of Robin Hood is that the script delivered power, and it examines how power can be used for good or bad," he said. "Robin Hood is a real man in our story. With all the scars, the pain, the regret, and, yes, the love."
"Mike's story has weight to it," added Jackman. "For me, it's beautiful and human."
The Death of Robin Hood hits theaters on Friday, June 19.
