Gracie Abrams isn’t worried about her career being affected by her relationship with Paul Mescal.

The Grammy-nominated artist slammed rumors that her boyfriend isn’t the best muse for her songwriting in a recent interview with *Rolling Stone*. The fan commentary came months after she confessed to once fearing a long-term romance could hinder her craft.

“I was worried feeling secure and stable was threatening my drive to write music,” Abrams told *Vogue** *of her relationship with Mescal in June. “It freaked me out.”

Though her feelings haven’t shifted about their healthy relationship and the communication that comes along with it, Abrams was baffled by the outcry over her candid admission. “I’m like, ‘Are we on crack? Like, what the f---?’” she told *Rolling Stone** *in a recent profile.

“That was my cue to be like, ‘Oh, remember why you don’t look [at social media]?’”

Abrams also mentioned that she had “far less experience sitting down to write when I was filled with security and joy and love and safety,” before she started dating the *Normal People* star.

“And I was like, ‘Oh, s---, how am I going to approach this?’ Or, you know, ‘How’s it going to impact the quantity of songs I write?’ And it’s had the most amazing effect on my writing. It has given me the most amount of space to reflect on everything in my life.”

Added Abrams, “It has held a mirror to me in ways that I didn’t know a relationship with another person of any kind could. It has given me all the perspective that I could have ever hoped for, on previous relationships, on my relationship with my family, on my friendships. It is the greatest gift, period.”

Abrams and Mescal, who share a home in London together, have been dating since 2024. Romance speculation sparked between the musician and actor when they were seen out together in London and New York. They keep their relationship relatively quiet, though Abrams has posted about Mescal on her Instagram account.

She paid tribute to the *Hamnet** *star on Instagram in February for his birthday, which the actor shares with one of Abrams’ friends. “My whole heart!!!!!!!!! I love February 2… Happy birthday❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️I love you both more than words could ever describe. Thank you for making everything better,” she wrote beneath a carousel of pictures.

“I want to protect those things fundamentally,” Mescal previously told *Rolling Stone** *in September 2025 about their relationship. “Everything to do with that [relationship] is deeply precious to me.”

Mescal previously dated musician Phoebe Bridgers for two years, calling it quits in 2022. Abrams, meanwhile, was in a relationship with songwriter Blake Slatkin for five years. They also broke up in 2022.
