Eiza González is opening up about an insecurity early in her acting career.
The In the Grey star, 36, recalled feeling “so terrified” upon making her Hollywood breakout in 2017’s Baby Driver, the first major project in which she didn’t speak Spanish.
“I was very self-conscious about English not being my first language,” González said in her Tuesday, April 7 Women’s Health magazine cover story. The Mexico City-born actress moved to Los Angeles in 2013 after a starring role in the Argentinean-Mexican Nickelodeon sitcom Sueña Conmigo.
“I felt like I was just never going to have the naturality that it took,” she told the outlet. “Like when you’re speaking your language, you react in your language, and having to sort of fake that because you’re not in your natural language, people sometimes take for granted.”

It’s “preparation and discipline,” she added, that “really make the difference” when it comes to mastering a second language.

Baby Driver, in which González starred opposite Ansel Elgort, marked the beginning of her steady Hollywood takeover. She’s since appeared in 2020’s Bloodshot, 2022’s Ambulance and 2024’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and series 3 Body Problem.
Throughout her ascent, she told Women’s Health, she struggled with compulsive eating and body dysmorphia. “Now with age and maturity, in hindsight, I’m like, I was really unwell,” González said, sharing that she’s since learned she’s living with endometriosis, adenomyosis, and polycystic ovary syndrome.
“I never went down a rabbit hole of alcoholism or [other addictions],” she said. “Mine was just this incredibly complex journey with my own body.”
González stars with Jake Gyllenhaal, Henry Cavill and Rosamund Pike in the Guy Ritchie-directed In the Grey, a heist thriller in theaters May 15. Her other 2026 projects include Hulu’s recently released Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice and I Love Boosters (in theaters May 22), with Season 2 of 3 Body Problem expected to premiere on Netflix later this year.
