Bruce Springsteen shared that his wife Patti Scialfa is in remission from multiple myeloma
He praised the Pan-Mass Challenge for its impact on cancer research and highlighted the importance of hope and caregivers
Springsteen revealed her diagnosis in 2024
Bruce Springsteen is sharing a hopeful message about his wife’s health.
At the annual Pan-Mass Challenge, which is a bike ride that raises funds for cancer research and treatment at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Springsteen, 76, sent in a pre-recorded message and acoustic rendition of “Born to Run.”
“We’re a little late, but here we are and it’s a pleasure to be with you,” Springsteen said in the video, according to a video posted on X. “Since 1980, you have inspired a community that has done something remarkable. You’ve never stopped believing that ordinary people can make an extraordinary difference. And because of that countless lives have been saved.”
Then, the “Dancing in the Dark” singer revealed that his wife, Patti Scialfa, “has been living with her multiple myeloma for over eight years, but now thankfully she is in remission.”
He then noted that there’s “millions of families facing cancer” — and it was important to remember that “hope has a face.”
“It’s our physician who refuses to stop searching and caring, [and] it’s our nurse who sits beside us when we’re scared and always makes our journey just a little bit easier,” he said.

“I’ve spent my life writing songs about the people who keep believing when life gives them every reason not to and for those who refuse to leave someone behind. That’s always been the best of America to Patti and I,” he continued. “Now, more than ever, the world needs more everyday heroes like the folks who make up the PMC.”
Springsteen revealed his wife’s diagnosis in the documentary Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Bandin October 2024. In the doc, he said she was diagnosed in 2018.
“This affects my immune system so I just have to be careful what I choose to do and where I choose to go,” Scialfa said in the documentary. “Every once in a while, I come to a show or two and I can sing a few songs onstage, and that’s been a treat. That’s the new normal for me right now, and I’m okay with that.”

Later that month, at the doc’s Los Angeles premiere at the Academy of Motion Pictures Museum, Springsteen opened up about how his wife’s diagnosis led to him speaking about the importance of cherishing life during performances.
“Hey, you get up around our age, and those are the things you’re thinking about,” he told the audience. “Patti and I have had to deal with her illness, and you’re worried about... it is a part of your life now, questions of mortality, and it just becomes a part of your life.”
In June, Springsteen and Scialfa celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary. The couple share son Evan, who they welcomed in July 1990, daughter Jessica, who was born in December 1991 and son Sam, who was born in January 1994.
