An old video of Donald Trump speaking to a very young Barron Trump has resurfaced, giving Americans some insight into how the president approached fatherhood long before his youngest son became a familiar public figure.
The clip, which was originally filmed when Barron was about five years old, shows the future president talking to his son ahead of preschool. The boy was dressed in a tiny suit, and stood in his dad’s embrace as he quietly listened as his father laid out a list of expectations that went far beyond the classroom.
“I want all A’s,” Trump tells his son as he sat as his desk. He pointed his finger, keeping it up to hold the young boy’s attention.
“Okay,” Barron replies.
But that was only the beginning, as Trump took the chance to list it all out for Barron on this occasion.
Four rules Trump wanted Barron to remember
Trump went on to tell Barron there are four things he wants him to avoid as he grows up, as he looked at him fondly.
“No drugs, no alcohol, no cigarettes,” Trump said before adding another instruction that has attracted fresh attention online.
“And you know what else? No tattoos. I don’t ever want to see tattoos on you.”
The clip had the internet talking because many had watched Barron grown up since Donald Trump first became president in 2017. He is now a sophomore at New York University’s Washington campus, and Barron has become one of the most closely watched members of the Trump family even though he rarely speaks in public.
Donald and Melania have different parenting styles
As interest in the video grows, many are asking questions about Trump’s parenting style, and if it is different from his wife’s way of parenting.

Judi James, a body language expert, has said that the president and Melania Trump have always shown their different approaches to raising Barron.
James previously told The Mirror that Trump’s body language suggests a proud, demanding father who encourages independence, while Melania has typically appeared more protective and nurturing in public with their son.
She said that Melania uses “support gestures” like when she has an “arm wrapped around her son as he leans forward in the oldest photo, and then both hands used for gentle support and restraint as he starts to toddle in some of the later ones.”
However, the expert said that Trump was proud of his youngest son. “As Barron gets older Trump tends to stand him directly in front of himself, clutching both his shoulders in a gesture of pride and endorsement.”
She also noted that Trump also allowed his son to stand on his own feet, so to speak. “Finally, once Barron grows taller and those ‘stabilizer’ hands come off, Trump appears to display confidence in his son by allowing him his body language independence.”
In the video, Trump was emphasizing achievement as well as personal discipline, even before Barron had officially started school.
Trump’s older children have also spoken positively about his parenting over the years. In 2016, reports Politico, Ivanka Trump described her father as demanding but supportive, saying he always made his children feel like a priority even when work kept him busy.
